Examples of Reasonable Accommodation in the Workplace for ADHD

Reasonable accommodations depend on your place of work and your position. Accommodations may include:

      • Frequent breaks
      • Workspace alterations
      • Work schedule changes
      • Technology assistance
      • Delegating work
      • Use of audio equipment
      • Use of intrusive reminders and timers
      • Part-time working remotely
      • Reducing sound in the work area (closing doors)
      • Electronic organizers
      • Allowing fidget toys at work

ADHD Discrimination in the Workplace

If ADHD symptoms significantly limit your work activity you may be eligible to disability status in the workplace. Companies are legally forbidden from discriminating against disabled employees and they are required to make reasonable accommodations in the workplace. However, a diagnosis of ADHD does not automatically give you disability status. A disability is defined as a condition that limits a person’s activities.

Annoying ADHD Coworker

If you have an annoying ADHD coworker the best thing you can do is educate yourself about ADHD in order to better understand them.

FAQ

How can I work if I have ADHD?

With the correct medication, therapy, and ADHD coaching you can get your ADHD symptoms under control in order to hold down a job. Look for a job that suits your ADHD symptoms – if you are restless then look for a job where you can move around. Find a job where you can get accommodations for your disorder that will help you perform your duties. Most importantly, ask for help when you need it.

What is the best job for someone with ADHD?

Each ADHD individual has a unique skill set and you can choose a job according to your particular strengths, talents, and interests. ADHD adults often find the most success in jobs that require hands-on creativity, passion, high-intensity or highly structured work environment.

      • Hands-on Creativity – fashion, actor, artist, graphic designer, mechanic, architect
      • Passion – teacher, social worker, vet, doctor, nurse, fitness trainer, author, clergy
      • High Intensity- police, correctional officer, sports coach, critical care, firefighter
      • Highly Structured – military, management, accountant, computers, factory worker
      • Individual High Risk – construction, stockbroker, pro athlete, entrepreneur, pilot
      • Fast-paced – ER, advertising, cook, customer support, web developer

Can I be fired for having ADHD?

No, you cannot be fired for having ADHD. The law protects people with ADHD from being fired because they have a disability and provides for them being given reasonable accommodations at work. However, ADHD adults can be fired for not being able to do their job when provided with reasonable and appropriate accommodations. ADHD adults can also be fired for all other reasons not related to their disability.

Should you tell your employer you have ADHD?

Employees are not legally obliged to tell their boss about their disorder. The choice is up to the individual with ADHD. If you feel you need accommodations at work to allow you to perform your duties, then make a time to talk privately with your employer. Employers are required to make reasonable accommodations for employees with disabilities. If you are going to tell your employer about your disorder, then you should have the medical diagnosis paperwork to back it up and decide exactly what accommodations you would need in order to perform better at work.
