How is ADHD diagnosed in teenagers?

If you suspect that your teenage child may have ADHD you can use the psychological testing for ADHD in teenagers online. If the online test indicates that your teen may have ADHD make an appointment with your healthcare provider. Your doctor will use the guidelines set out in the American Association of Pediatrics’ manual for diagnosing mental disorders. For teens up to age 16, six ADHD symptoms must be present and for teens 17 years and older, five ADHD symptoms must be present for a diagnosis. After extensive interviews with your teenage child; computer-based tests; rating scales; self-report checklists; a physical exam and perhaps a neurological exam your doctor will decide whether to diagnose ADHD. For an ADHD diagnosis, the symptoms must have been present before age 12; they must occur in more than one setting and your teen must have experienced ADHD symptoms for more than 6 months.

Is it possible to develop ADHD as a teenager?

Research shows that people are born with ADHD although sometimes ADHD goes undiagnosed and the symptoms only show themselves later in life. Sometimes the new challenges faced by teens in high school can bring out ADHD symptoms. To get a clinical diagnosis of ADHD, the symptoms must have been present in some form before age 12.
