Psychologist Treatment for ADHD

Today there is a wide variety of psychological treatments for ADHD patients. Clinical psychologists trained in ADHD diagnosis and treatment can administer care for ADHD patients. However, most psychologists are not licensed to prescribe medication for ADHD. The psychological treatment of ADHD patients is usually through talk therapy.

During a session with a psychologist, ADHD patients can talk freely about the way they feel; the challenges they have in life and the way ADHD symptoms affect them. Behavior therapy in particular can be effective as a co-treatment with ADHD medicine. With psychotherapy and cognitive behavior therapy, the focus is on how to deal with ADHD issues. Psychological treatment for ADHD has been found to be effective in children and adults.

Psychologist for ADHD Child

Through talk therapy, a psychologist for ADHD children will be able to give the child tools to manage his symptoms. Child psychologists teach their young ADHD patients strategies to manage their emotions, behavior, angry outbursts, and to stay focused in class.

The psychologist will talk to the child to identify problems they may be having and then discuss ways to solve these problems. Psychological treatment of ADHD children may involve teaching them social skills and how to organize their school assignments.

The therapist provides a safe space for the child to talk about ADHD. Child psychologists may use activities, drawing, role-play, or play therapy to help ADHD children. Child psychologists will usually use behavior therapy or cognitive behavior therapy (mindfulness techniques) when treating an ADHD child. Occupational therapy may also be recommended when there are learning disabilities.

Psychological Treatment for ADHD in Adults

Psychological treatment for ADHD adults may be called psychotherapy, counseling, or coaching. The ADHD adult is educated about ADHD and taught skills to cope with ADHD symptoms. The therapist may focus on managing stress, organizational skills, time management, social skills, or other issues that are disrupting the ADHD adult’s life. Talk therapy is used to deal with self-esteem issues, anger issues, or the emotional baggage that has built up over the years due to the disruption caused by ADHD symptoms
