Medical Treatment Options for Students

If a high school student is already on ADHD medication they can continue with the same medication in college. There should be continued medical supervision to ensure that the medication does not need to be adjusted or the dosage altered. The most common type of ADHD medication prescribed for college students is stimulants such as Ritalin, Dexedrine, or Adderall. If stimulant medication is not effective or causes too many side effects, then students can consider non-stimulant medication such as Strattera (Atomoxetine). The effects of Strattera can last up to 24 hours and it also has some antidepressant qualities although it may increase suicidal thoughts in some people.

Therapeutic Treatment Options for ADHD College Students

ADHD medication should always be coupled with therapeutic treatment. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is the preferred form of psychosocial therapy for college students. With CBT students are helped to reorient their thinking; change their behavior and reduce self-critical thoughts. ADHD coaching is based on CBT and helps ADHD students gain strategies to modify their behavior to manage their time; prioritize and organize. ADHD coaching is a form of Cognitive Behavior Therapy and can help college students cope with the demands of campus life.

Natural and Alternative ADHD Treatments for ADHD College Students

If you prefer to go the natural route you can employ ADHD strategies like creating a distraction-free study environment; having a structured daily routine and a healthy lifestyle with adequate sleep, exercise, and nutritious food. You could try alternative therapies such as yoga, meditation, and art therapy. Natural supplements such as Bach flower remedies, zinc, Ginkgo, ginseng, vitamins B and E, magnesium, omega-3, passionflower, pycnogenol and Rhodiola Rosea may ease ADHD symptoms. There are diets that claim to help with ADHD including high-protein, low-sugar diets, and the Feingold diet.

ADHD Treatment in the College Environment

ADHD medication is often abused by college students whether they have ADHD or not. It is important to follow your doctor’s instructions and take ADHD medication as prescribed. Never share your ADHD medication; this can have dangerous consequences.

Make sure that your college is aware of your disorder and that you are getting the appropriate academic accommodations. A high school IEP (Individualized Education Plan) “expires” when you graduate high school and you will need a “transition IEP” before college to get college academic accommodations. Contact your college and register with the appropriate office (usually called the Disability Services).
